From Groundbreaking to Ribbon Cutting: Documenting Commercial Builds in Atlanta, Nashville & Huntsville

Every commercial project has two moments that everyone remembers: the day the shovels go in and the day the ribbon gets cut. Everything in between, the eighteen months of steel, concrete, weather, and problem-solving, is where the real story of a build lives. I photograph both the moments and the story.

Why commercial builders document the whole arc

The general contractors and developers I work with in Atlanta, and increasingly in Nashville and Huntsville, are competing for the same kind of work: distribution centers, data centers, hospitals, mixed-use developments, and manufacturing plants along the Southeast's growing industrial corridors. When they respond to an RFP, the photographs of their last comparable project matter almost as much as the numbers. A complete visual record, from site clearing to the finished lobby, tells an owner that this team can deliver a project of this scale and has done it before.

There is also the internal side. Progress images keep executives, investors, and out-of-town owners connected to a project they cannot visit every week. A monthly set of well-made photographs and a short drone clip does more than a page of status updates.

What I photograph on a commercial project

The groundbreaking ceremony, with the executives and the owner in a clean, well-lit group frame and candid moments around it. Regular progress visits from consistent vantage points, on the ground and by drone. The milestone days: topping out, first tenant fit-out, substantial completion. Crew and safety culture images, which are increasingly requested for recruiting and company culture pages. And finally the completed project, photographed properly at dawn and dusk so it earns a place in your portfolio next to your best work.

Working across three states

I am based in Atlanta, and Nashville and Huntsville are both an easy drive for me. I schedule regional projects so a single trip covers multiple sites, which keeps travel costs sensible. Deliverables are organized by project and date in a shared gallery, with images sized for reports, press releases, and web. I am fully comfortable with site safety requirements, PPE, and working around active crews.
