Photographing Architecture Across the Southeast: From Atlanta to Chattanooga, Greenville, Asheville & Birmingham

Atlanta is home, but my work does not stop at the state line. In a normal month I might photograph a school in Chattanooga, a downtown office renovation in Greenville, a mountain residence outside Asheville, and a medical building in Birmingham, then drive back on I-75 to edit. The Southeast has become one connected design region, and the firms I work with build across it.

Why firms hire one photographer for the whole region

Consistency. If your portfolio has one building photographed in warm, natural light and the next one shot flat with a real estate flash setup, the work looks like it came from two different offices. A single photographic voice across your projects, whether they are in Midtown Atlanta or in Huntsville, makes the portfolio feel like one body of work, which is exactly what it is.

Travel from Atlanta is also simpler than it sounds. Chattanooga is under two hours. Greenville, Birmingham, and Asheville are each about three. Nashville and Charlotte are a comfortable day trip with an overnight. I keep travel costs transparent and fold them into a single quote so there are no surprises.

How a regional shoot comes together

It starts with a conversation and a set of drawings or renderings. From there I put together a shot list with your team, check sun angles for the site, and pick a date with a weather backup. On the day, I usually arrive before sunrise and stay through blue hour, which means a full-day shoot in Greenville captures the building in three completely different moods. I photograph the exterior, the key interior spaces, the details that show your material choices, and, when the owner allows, the building in use with people.

Projects that travel well

The types of work I most often photograph on the road are schools and university buildings, healthcare and medical office projects, hospitality and multifamily developments, adaptive reuse of historic industrial buildings, and private residences in the mountains. If you are an architect, landscape architect, or developer with projects scattered across Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas, or Alabama, it is worth talking about photographing several of them in one trip.
